Scioto County Sheriff David Thoroughman stated that his office was contacted by Scioto County Children Services, along with the New Boston Police Department, on Friday January 10, 2025 at 5:54pmrequesting assistance.
The call came in that a 9-month-old was being transported to Nationwide Children’s Hospital for injuries which included broken bones, a black eye and other unexplained injuries.
Sheriff Thoroughman stated that the 9-month-old child was transported by ambulance to Southern Ohio Medical Center.  The child was later transferred and admitted to Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus to be seen by a team of doctors on their child abuse team.
Sheriff Thoroughman stated that detectives responded to 3621 Rhodes Ave. in New Boston, making contact with the mother and others. Â As a result of the investigation, Kayla Sierra Willams, age 30, was arrested.
The investigation continued and the case was presented to the Scioto County Grand Jury on Friday, March 7, 2025. Â On March 13th an indictment warrant was filed against the father of the children.
Detectives were able to determine a time line of the injuries to the child. Â The oldest injury occurred approximately 10 days prior andthe most recent injuring occurred 4 days before January 12th, the date that Kayla Williams was arrested.
Detectives learned that thechild was seen earlier on Friday, January 10th, at King’s Daughter Medical Center. Upon dismissal of the child the mother was given instructions to take the child straight to Nationwide Hospital.
Children Services were later contacted when the child never showed up to Nationwide Hospital. Children Services removed the child and had the child transported to SOMC for treatment. Two other children were removed from the residence.
Sheriff Thoroughman stated that on Saturday, March 15th the Washington Township deputy responded to a possible location given for the suspect which resulted in his arrest.
Arrested was Sammy D Nash, age 54, of Rhodes Ave. New Boston. Nash has been charged with nine (9) counts of Endangering Children. Â Two (2) counts of the nine counts being a felony of the 2nd degree and the other seven (7) counts being a felony of the 3rddegree.
Nash is being held in the Scioto County Jail without bond and will appear in Portsmouth Common Pleas Court on a later date.
Sheriff Thoroughman would like to thank the Scioto County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victim’s Unit, Nationwide Children’s Hospital, the New Boston Police Department and the Scioto County Children Services for their assistance in this investigation.
